In California, some magnificent examples of sparkling wines are produced with particular good quality in the zone of Carneros and further North along the coast of the Anderson Valley. These wines are made following the Traditional Champagne Method.

Champagnes
To be classified as Champagne, a wine has to do more than sparkle. It has to come from the Champagne region in northeast France. The best Champagne will have a combination of freshness, richness, and delicacy, with a gentle strength that very few sparkling wines can achieve elsewhere. Perhaps the secret to the success of Champagne lies in its location, as it is France's northernmost vineyard, making the growing season very long and cool. Or it could be the unique Methode Champenoise process, a second fermentation in the bottle that produces delicate bubbles with the classic smell of brioche and toffee. Perfect as an aperitif, this is a wine for celebration, as no other wine is so closely associated with joy and festivity.
