Reds of California

Cabernet Sauvignon
Synonymous with serious red wine capable of aging into subtle splendor. For this reason Cabernet Sauvignon is also the best traveled red wine variety, but since it is a relatively late ripened it is more suited for warmer climates where it is responsible for a very large number of the world's best red wines. In California's Napa Valley this varietals produces wines of splendid depth and structure punctuated by delicious flavors of black cherry and herbs. California's reputation was created by its rich and weighty wines, currently producers are focusing on softer, more approachable wines.

Proprietary Reds

One of the most significant differences between California and Europe is winemaking tradition. California lacks the history of

Europe, and its winemakers use this to their advantage. Experimentation is not just allowed, but encouraged, and the results

are consistently exciting and enjoyable proprietary blends not seen anywhere else in the world.

Syrah
The Syrah grape is among nature's glories, producing some of the world's best wines from terroirs as diverse as France, Australia, and California. In California Syrah's popularity is rising very fast, producers are turning out superb wines often modeled after Hermitage wines of Cote Rotie.

Merlot
Merlot ripens early, so it is much easier to grow than most grapes. Its bigger berries and thinner skins generally produce less tannic, and more opulent wines that can be enjoyed sooner. Of course it can also produce wines that can age for a relatively long time and evolve in rich and complex style, as witnessed by the great wines of Pomerol.

Zinfandel
Zinfandel may trace its roots to Slovenia (not Puglia as often cited) but over the last decades has blossomed into California's wine. It is a grape we can call our own because in many parts of the state it achieves great levels of quality with personalized syles reflecting the different areas of production.

Pinot Noir
This is the most elusive grape, it is relatively early ripening and very sensitive to terroir. It buds early and ripens early, which makes it very suitable for cooler climate. In California the most promising areas are Carneros, Russian River Valley, parts of Monterey County and Santa Barbara County. While the wines from Carneros and Monterey County are generally bolder and broader, those from Russian River and Santa Barbara are known for their bright and sweet fruit with captivating bouquets redolent of ripe black cherries, violets and spice.
